Alan is an accomplished figure in Irish men’s hockey, renowned for his longevity, professionalism, and impact at both international and club level. An Irish Olympian and European bronze medallist, Alan played a large part in one of the most successful eras in Irish men’s hockey. Over the course of an international career spanning almost 15 years, he earned an exceptional 187 senior caps and scored 79 goals for Ireland, placing him fourth on the all-time Irish men’s goalscoring list — a remarkable achievement in a green shirt.

Alan’s influence extended well beyond the international stage. He enjoyed a distinguished professional career across Europe, playing and coaching in some of the continent’s strongest domestic leagues. His club career included spells with HC Den Bosch in the Netherlands and leading Belgian sides Royal Racing Club de Bruxelles and Gantoise Hockey Club, experiences that further shaped his tactical understanding and coaching philosophy at the highest level of the game.

Since returning to Ireland, Alan has continued to play a pivotal role in the domestic hockey landscape. He currently serves as player-coach of Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club men’s first team, competing in the EY Hockey League, where his leadership and experience remain invaluable. In addition, Alan is the Director of Hockey at Holy Child Killiney School, a prestigious all-girls secondary school in South Dublin, where he is deeply committed to developing the next generation of players and fostering excellence within Irish hockey.
